Significant Weather Report
Station Number: KY-KX-4
Station Name: Barbourville 0.4 N
Observation Date: 5/8/2025 6:00 PM
Submitted 5/08/2025 7:04 PM
Notes: See the separate hail report. Since 12:00 noon, the humidity was extremely high--higher than I'd ever experienced anywhere near KY-KX-4 station. ("Ever" means 24 years in the area.) For that matter, it was more humid than I've experienced anywhere but the tropics or subtropics. 5:30 PM Went outdoors to walk. Sky was overcast with some clouds in various shades of gray. 5:45 Sky darkened significantly. I went inside for rain jacket, and then back out. 5:50 Light rain began. 6:00 Heavy rain, thunder and hail began. (I dove inside.) Hail pelted down intensely until 6:10. Hail was round or ovoid. It reached the ground ranging from clear to translucent to opaque. Light rain continued until 6:30. 7:00 No rain falling, but rumbles of thunder continue. The .73 in. rainfall noted above includes rain that accumulated since reading the gauge at 5:00 AM. However, most of the precipitation fell from 6:00-6:30 PM. Note that hail is extremely rare in this area. On average, I don't see it more than once every five years.
