National Weather Service (NWS) Snow Sensor Research Website
For the 2006-2007 snow season, 17 sites across the U.S. are testing ultrasonic snow depth sensors for
possible inclusion in NWS automated weather stations. The sites consist of 15 NWS Forecast Offices,
2 NWS test bed sites and 1 COOP station located at Colorado State University.
All data is PRELIMINARY and EXPERIMENTAL. Each site has setup three Scientific® SR-50 Sonic
Ranging Sensors and a temperature probe. Site installations are identical with the sensors installed
120º from each other, with one oriented to True North. Traditional NWS manual snow measurements, taken on
both a 6 and 24 hour basis, are being collected with the automated data for comparison.
